History

We are following the tradition when in 1801 the French weaver Joseph Jacquard invented the loom attachment, which allowed the production of complicated woven patterns with the help of punctured paper cards.

Textile looms using these Jacquard cards became part of the textile craft in the former Austria-Hungarian empire. They soon became part of local tradition in the mountainous regions of the Czech kingdom (which was then part of Austro-Hungarian Empire) as well. Back then poorer people of these regions were grateful for a new source of income, and they quickly mastered this new craft.

Our family comes from a small picturesque countryside village in the mountains, on the edge of flowering wild meadows. We are part of the ancient tradition of local loom-weavers who have been creating beautiful textiles on hand looms with love and care for over two centuries.

In the past, our mountain range has formed a natural border between provinces, kingdoms, and states. The challenging terrain was difficult to patrol, so many people in the area smuggled their textiles over these mountains for better earnings. It is rumored that the first known skis in the area were utilized and used for those smuggling trips. In the beginning of the last century, local weavers slowly became part of small textile production facilities, also called weaving mills. Members of our family came from a long line of those hardworking, colorful characters…

Here in America we can cooperate with family back in Europe and participate in designing new motifs with intricate patterns. Influenced by our home European design traditions, we also ventured into designing motifs from the adventurous, romantic American West… We appreciate our textile heritage and local family weaving traditions. Our values are reliability and quality.

Woven on old looms ...

Despite the long tradition and years working in this field we love the fact that there is still something new to learn. The problem solving and intricacies of the different old loom machines are addictive to us, just like solving a puzzle.

We love our craft with its interesting history, and we enjoy rediscovering traditional processes that are often forgotten.

Our family’s acquired knowledge in traditional textile craftsmanship is complemented by the years of experience of our predecessors… Hunts for old pieces of fabric, visiting our countryside’s castles and old museums, and figuring out how ancient fabrics were woven are all part of the adventures of this work.
